In 1811, Congress narrowly voted against renewing the First Bank of the United States’ charter, despite intense lobbying and alleged threats from Nathan Rothschild predicting war. Critics called the bank a “swindle” and “vulture.” Vice President George Clinton cast the deciding vote to terminate the charter.
The War of 1812 followed shortly but ended in a stalemate by 1814. Although the bank was defeated, it was reestablished in a more powerful form two years later.
